BMI Calculator
Work out your BMI against both the WHO and the Chinese standard, with a healthy weight range, BMR, daily calories and a body-fat estimate.
Healthy weight for your height
Energy needs
Mifflin–St Jeor equation, the formula clinical dietitians use. Treat it as a starting point and adjust after two weeks of real results.
Body fat estimate (US Navy method)
Measure the neck below the larynx, the waist at the navel, and (for women) the hips at the widest point. The estimate is usually within 3 points of a body scan; leave the boxes empty to skip it.
How to use the BMI calculator
- Choose metric or imperial, then enter your height, weight, age and sex.
- Read the BMI value and both verdicts — the WHO thresholds and the Chinese ones, which are stricter because the same BMI carries more metabolic risk in East Asian bodies.
- Add your neck and waist measurements at the bottom for a body-fat estimate, which tells you far more than BMI alone.
FAQ
Why do the WHO and Chinese categories disagree?
The WHO calls 24 to 25 normal; the Chinese guideline (WS/T 428) calls 24 overweight and 28 obese. Studies of Chinese populations found that diabetes and hypertension risk starts rising at a lower BMI than in European populations, so the thresholds were lowered.
Is BMI reliable for me?
It is a screening number, not a diagnosis. It cannot tell muscle from fat, so a trained athlete often measures "overweight", and it is misleading for children, pregnant women and people over about 65. Waist circumference and body-fat percentage describe health risk better.
How accurate is the body-fat estimate?
The US Navy tape method is typically within about three percentage points of a DEXA scan when you measure carefully at the right places, which is good enough for tracking a trend over months.
