What readers may do
Restrictions (printing, copying…) are honoured by well-behaved readers, but they are not unbreakable. The open password is the part that really keeps the file shut.
How to password-protect a PDF
- Drop in the PDF you want to lock.
- Type the password readers will need to open it, repeat it, and untick anything they should not be allowed to do.
- Press Encrypt PDF and download the protected copy.
FAQ
What encryption is used?
AES-128 with the standard PDF security handler, applied in your browser — the file and the password never travel over the network. Every mainstream reader (Acrobat, Preview, Chrome, Edge, Foxit) can open the result.
What is the difference between the two passwords?
The open password is required to view the document at all. The owner password only unlocks the permission settings, so you can hand out the open password while keeping the right to lift the restrictions yourself.
I forgot the password — can you recover the file?
No, and neither can anyone else. Nothing is uploaded and no key is stored, so an encrypted PDF with a lost password is genuinely lost. Keep a copy of the original.
