How to use the emoji picker

  1. Search in English or Chinese, or tap a category chip to browse — every emoji carries keywords in both languages.
  2. Pick a skin tone at the top if you want one; it is applied automatically to the emoji that support it.
  3. Click emoji to add them to the string box, then copy the whole string — or copy a single emoji from the details panel along with its code points and shortcode.

FAQ

Why does an emoji show up as a box or as two separate pictures?

Emoji are drawn by your device's font. Newer emoji and some combinations are missing from older systems, so they fall back to a box or to the individual parts. The character you copy is still correct and will display properly on an up-to-date device.

What is a shortcode for?

Shortcodes like  are how Slack, Discord, GitHub and many static site generators refer to emoji in plain text. Copy the shortcode instead of the character when you are writing Markdown.

Do skin tones work on every emoji?

No — only on the human emoji that Unicode defines modifiers for, such as hands, faces and people. Objects, animals and flags have no tone variants, so the picker leaves them unchanged.
