FAQ

Which format should I choose?

MP3 for maximum compatibility — car stereos, old phones, voice recorders. WAV when another program needs raw, lossless audio. WebM/Opus when you want the smallest file at a given quality, for example for a website or a chat app.

Why can I not convert to M4A or FLAC?

Browsers ship encoders only for MP3 (through the LAME library used here), Opus and raw PCM. There is no built-in AAC or FLAC encoder available to a web page, so this tool does not pretend to offer them.

Will lowering the sample rate save space?

Yes, and it also lowers the highest frequency the file can carry. 44100 Hz is CD quality; 16000 Hz is plenty for speech and roughly a third of the size; 8000 Hz sounds like a phone call. For music, leave it at the source rate.
