YouTube Thumbnail Downloader

Paste any YouTube link and grab its cover image in every size, from 120px up to full 1280×720 maxres.

🌐 Thumbnails are loaded directly from img.youtube.comFree · No sign-up

Thumbnails are loaded straight from YouTube's image server (img.youtube.com). Nothing is sent to PocketPlay, and no video is downloaded — only the cover image.

How to download a YouTube thumbnail

  1. Copy the video's address — a normal watch link, a youtu.be short link, a /shorts/ link or an embed URL all work, and so does the bare video ID.
  2. Paste it in the box and click Show thumbnails. Every size YouTube published for that video appears with its real pixel dimensions.
  3. Click Download on the size you want, or right-click the picture and choose “Save image as…”.

FAQ

Which sizes exist?

YouTube generates maxresdefault (1280×720), sddefault (640×480), hqdefault (480×360), mqdefault (320×180) and default (120×90). Maxres only exists if the original upload was at least 720p, so older or low-resolution videos show four sizes instead of five.

Why is the picture letterboxed with black bars?

The sddefault, hqdefault and default sizes are cropped to a 4:3 box, so a 16:9 frame gets bars top and bottom. Only maxresdefault and mqdefault keep the widescreen shape — use maxres when you need a clean 16:9 image.

Am I allowed to use the image?

The thumbnail belongs to whoever uploaded the video. Referencing it — a link preview, a review, a citation — is normally fine; republishing it as your own artwork or on merchandise is not. When in doubt, ask the creator.
